Crankshaft types with single cams and inward pushing pistons (for example, Staffa or SAI hydraulic motors) are essentially an older design but have extremely high starting torque characteristics. Their displacement ranges from 40cc/rev to about 50litres, but they are sometimes limited by power output. Crankshaft-type radial plunger motors are capable of running at crawling speeds, and some can operate seamlessly up to 1500rpm while providing almost constant output torque characteristics. This makes them still the most versatile of designs.
The single CAM radial plunger motor itself exists in many different designs. Often the differences are in the way the fluid is distributed to the different pistons or cylinders, and in the design of the cylinders themselves. Some motors use connecting rods to attach pistons to cams (much like internal combustion engines), while others use floating boots or even spherical contact telescopic cylinders like ParkerDenisonCalzoni types. Each design has its own advantages and disadvantages, such as flow capacity, high volume efficiency, high reliability, etc.
